The ray gun shoots a pinkish-purple laser that explodes into a cloud of the same color. It has no muzzle flash and no recoil.
I know that, but this is standard issue. It shoots a greenish bolt that poofs into a cloud of the same cloud.

I heard that there really was an attempt to create the ray gun back in 1947 but the project ended up being abandoned.
